February 13-14, 2015
Santiago
(Valparaiso), Chile
We
arrived in Santiago February 13, 2015. We stayed in the
Intercontinental Hotel which upgraded our room to the Presidential Suite
since they made us wait several hours before check in. (Lou really drives a
hard bargain!) The suite was fantastic. Seven huge rooms,
including an executive dining room, bedroom, sitting room, sun room, sauna,
etc. The views of the Santiago skyline from the sunroom were
phenomenal.
We
boarded a bus the next morning for the port city of Valparaiso, where the
Golden Princess awaited us. Valparaiso is a
bay bordered by steep hills, stately old Victorian
homes, cable cars. Populated in 1536, and named after the birthplace of
conquistador Diego de Almagro, Valparaiso is Chile's oldest city. It
is also the gateway to Chile's central valley and the capital of
Santiago. With a population of over 5 million people, Santiago
sprawls at the feet of the snow-capped Andes. The Maipo Valley,
Chile's internationally renowned wine district is a short drive to
the south.
