The Gaillard or Culebra Cut is the narrow part of the canal.

A widening project was completed on November 6, 2001. The width increased from 152 meters to 192 meters in the straight sections, and up to 222 meters in curves.  So now two-way traffic is possible even in the cut. 

 
Can you see the little tiny contruction vehicles in this picture?

Why are they carving away at this wall?  Avalanche control.

 
Now we are passing under the Century Bridge.
 
Now we are looking back at another cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas, as they come around the bend.
