The Ship:
Cruise number 46 was somewhat challenging.
Hurricane Melissa was raging in the
Caribbean. Fortunately Celebrity changed our itinerary from
eastern to western Caribbean in order to avoid Melissa
completely. Turned out to be one of the smoothest cruises I have
ever had.
We started with some hassle at the Port of Miami. We were
notified a day before that the Celebrity Beyond would depart
from Terminal A but return to Terminal E.
We were instructed to drop off our luggage at Terminal A then
circle around and park the car at Terminal E. Then take the
shuttle back to terminal a. Well the port of Miami is the
biggest cruise port in the world and they need to improve their
signage. Ongoing construction and lane changes make the matter
much worse.
Our first attempt at finding Terminal E parking
resulted in missing our unmarked turn thus placing us on the
tunnel to exit the port area back into downtown
Miami. We then circled around and came
back into the port. This time we found Terminal E but could not
find any parking lot. One attendant told us there was no
Parking for Terminal A at Terminal E.
We argued with him but apparently no one had told him about the
issue. The attendant told us we had to go back to Terminal A to
park.
Okay fine so we left Terminal E found Terminal A and a security
officer told us that yes indeed the parking lot at Terminal A
was closed and we had to go back to terminal E parking..
Needless to say our tempers were a little short at this point
after an hour running around this port. Finally got back to
terminal E where we saw signs for parking before the actual
terminal but the entrance was not clearly marked. An officer
told us what we had to do go up make a U-turn
then turn left etc. He was not aware of why the shuttle buses
were there. He was never told that people were going to park
there from terminal a and take the shuttle back to terminal a.
We found the parking lot and it is not a parking garage like you
see at Port Everglades. It is a wide open parking lot with no
markings whatsoever. So we have no idea what row and what spot
we parked the car. We took lots of pictures of the landscape and
buildings so when we get back we can
find the damn car. Needless to say if we ever do another cruise
out of the port of Miami, we will park
off-site and take an Uber into the
terminal.
Once we got the parking Fiasco resolved,
getting through the terminal and onto the ship was a cake walk.
Because we were in a suite, we got escorted onto the ship. We
then found our cabin easy enough on Deck 11. It is a
Celebrity Suite,
roughly 460 square feet. It has two separate rooms--one
the living room and the other a bedroom with its own door and
air conditioner. The balcony is rather
large with 2 chairs, table, and a nice couch to lie on.
The stateroom did have some bizzareness.
The living room was rather large and as such had low counters on
both sides where you can pile stuff or try not to knock over the
pretty plants, etc. There were drawers and cabinets underneath
so everytime I wanted to get something, I had to bend down past
my waist pretty much. There were 3
closets in the bedroom - Carol got 2 and I got 1 with the safe.
Not my favorite method of organizing storage space.

Days onboard:
Day one we checked out the casino to figure
out what slot machines we wanted to play. We had lunch at
the Luminae suite
only dining room which was most excellent. We ended up
calling it an early night cuz we were pretty tired and so we
did not eat dinner. We had a
really yummy turkey club sandwich at the Craft Social bar
where they had giant screen TVs to watch football games and
so on. Really nice lounge,
comfortable seating, lots
of people nice ambience,
excellent drinks and kind of like a Pub menu or you have
chicken wings and chips and dips and club sandwich etc.
Day two we had a nice
leisure morning on the balcony.
Our excellent Butler Rona brought us huge pot of coffee and
basket of croissants which were to die for. After breakfast
we spent several hours in the casino playing various slot
machines including Mo Mo Mummy, Rakin'
Bacon and Long Bao Bao -
Carol's favorite machine. Our plan was to play for a couple
hours and leave then come back so we ended up doing fairly
well only down a couple hundred dollars for the entire day.
But this is how we earn our free cruises.
We had lunch and dinner back at the Luminae restaurant and
we ate rather healthily. Lunch I
had cob salad and for dinner I had
Caesar salad and French onion
soup. We had plans for music and comedian but again tuckered
out so we called it an early evening and I watched
Monday Night Football. Rona our Butler had brought me a
bottle of wine the night before so I worked my way through
it not quite done yet. Butler is awesome cuz they will bring
you whatever you want. Suite comes with high-end
drink package and wifi.
Rona told me to not buy a bottle
of wine that she would bring me whatever wine was being
served in the retreat Lounge which is where I am now. There
you can get all the cocktails and wines free is part of the
retreat Suite package.
Day three and we are in Costa Maya, Mexico. Had a really
nice breakfast at Luminae where I
had blueberry pancakes and sausages while Carol had her
favorite, scrambled eggs and
bacon. We walked around the port for about an hour and a
half before coming back to the ship. It is still rather warm
in the Western Caribbean in late October although a heck of
a lot better than midsummer. We rushed back as we thought we
had a massage appointment at 11:00 a.m.
on the ship, but once we got there we realized it
was not until
the next day. Our wonderful Butler Rona took us down
to the captain's Club table and since I am Elite they made
Carol Elite as well. Welcome to the club,
Carol.
We are now hanging out in the Retreat
Lounge on Deck 15 listening to our books.
Carol is doing whatever on her phone and I am
writing this summary while sipping on
a gin and tonic.
On day 3 afternoon we hung out on the Retreat Sun deck on
deck 17 forward. Here we found lounge chairs under shade
while I consumed really good Margaritas - not tart at all.
We had cheeseburgers and fries. Life is tough. Later on we
had dinner at Luminae which was
okay, We are finding out
that we don't love fancy food where I do not even recognize
the ingredients. Breakfast and lunch are fine. We then went
to the casino and wish we hadn't. Gave back what we had
won earlier. Evening was spent at
Eden listening to a really
beautiful acoustic vocalist. Came back to cabin for a bit
and then headed out to adult comedian who was okay I thought
he was a bit filthy for no reason whatsoever. Filth
for the sake itself is just not
funny to me.

After our bridge tour, we headed to the spa
where we had a stone massage which felt really really
fabulous. I kept dozing off. However it was wicked expensive
and would not do it again. Headed to the covered pool which
was okay but not as good as what we had on the
Reflection last month which was
air conditioned and not as crowded. From there went to
the Ocean View Buffet near the
back the the ship and found the pizza bar.
The pizza is much better than what
it was like on Reflection but
still falls short of the pizza on Princess.
Now we are hanging out and then later we'll go to
the Cosmopolitan American
restaurant for dinner.
On Day 5 - Halloween - we attended
a Halloween party in the Retreat lounge. There were a lot of
interesting costumes and folks having a great time. Carol
got me devil horns and she wore cat ears. The highlight of
the party was the meeting the
captain and some of the executive bridge staff. Way cool.
Drinks and finger food were served. We had fun trying to
figure out some of the costumes. An obvious one was the guy
wearing a hand on his shoulder.
Day 6 and 7 were casino and retreat days. We had an
excellent dinner in the Cosmopolitan dining room. On day 7
we checked out the Tuscan dining room. Both were very good
and we enjoyed them more than we did the fancy food.

Our cabin on Deck 11 is right next to the bridge. Really, it is very next door. So on the evening of Day 3, the Captain was coming out as we were returning to our cabin. Okie, our cabin steward introduced us.
Of course the first thing I said to the Captain was "Sir, can I drive the ship?" He smiled and told Rona - our butler - to bring us for a tour the very next day at 10:00 a.m.. |

Celebrity Beyond Bridge
On day 4 at 10:00 a.m. Rona and the Second Officer escorted us into the bridge which was way way cool.
I met the first officer and we talked for quite a while. The captain walked in and I heard him talking to Carol and Rhona before he walked up to me. Apparently they had to get ready for a drill so he only spent a couple of minutes with us but we got a nice picture. We also got a picture from the wing that looks back at our balcony. |
